Akashi at Tanglin Road Orchard

DECEMBER 16, 2022

The beef was well… beefy with some bite, but tender enough; cooked just nice with just a little bit of char. Quite nice, but nothing I would go back for at close to $50. Appears to be frequented by those with family or business wealth, with many regulars.

Yugo Yakiniku – Karubi Beef Don at Jurong East

OCTOBER 13, 2022

Recommended by 8 Days and opened by ex delivery drivers. The karubi beef rib was smoky, tender and slightly beefy, but I couldn’t taste much marination and any other flavour, resulting in the bowl being slightly one dimensional.

Wano Niku – Japanese Yakiniku at Cantonment

JULY 12, 2022

The A4 Premium Yakiniku Don with Wagyu loin was quite delightful. The meat was flavourful and mildly sweet, tender enough with some fats but still had bite (although some pieces were a bit tougher). The sauce mixed with the rice was also very nice.

Prince Coffee House – Hainanese at Beach Road Arab Street

NOVEMBER 27, 2021

Old school Hainanese pork chop, crispy and with a sweet and piquant sauce. The chicken pie also tasted really old school, with starchy and mushroomy fillings. The beef hor fun was quite flat though in terms of flavour and wok hei. Nice little old school coffee house.

The Gyu Co – Beef Don at Jurong East

OCTOBER 12, 2021

Opened by an ex-DB Bistro cook. The rice itself was quite normal, while the beef was quite thin, tender and slightly fatty with some beefy flavour. The regular bowl came with a sticky-runny sous vide onsen egg, and a lot of the flavour came from the nice savoury-sweet brown sukiyaki broth-like sauce, apparently made from a stock of onions, celery and carrots, with apples, pears, bonito, burdock root, soy sauce and rice vinegar infused with kombu (kelp) added in for thickening. A lot of effort for the sauce, based on the 8 Days recommendation. The truffle bowl was nicer, elevating the flavours with the earthy scent of truffle.

Abundance – Taiwanese Beef Fried Rice & Gua Bao at Redhill

AUGUST 13, 2021

Recommended by 8 Days. The Niu Yolk fried rice came with a very nice truffle oil fragrance. The rice itself was moist, fragrant, and tasty with eggy and beef fat flavours. The onsen egg was cooked perfectly; the yellow yolk added a nice creamy flavour and texture to the rice. The sous vide beef short rib slices was beefy, smoky, tender and just slightly fatty. A very nice plate.

Came back again for the gua bao on 23 Dec 2021. The gua bao was really good. The mantou was really soft and pillowy, and there were great flavour and textural contrasts, from the soft and savoury pork belly, the sweet and crunchy peanuts, the sour and crisp preserved vegetables, and the fragrant coriander.

Beef Bro at Vivocity

AUGUST 7, 2021

Just a little something to remind myself of the pasar malams and flea markets that I miss so much. The beef was beefy and smoky, although slightly tough. Passable, made better by nolstagia.

Syohachi Wagyu Hamburg

DECEMBER 17, 2020

The hamburg was really nice, slightly fatty and unctuous, with the rich and creamy flavour that comes with wagyu beef. The patty had slight char on the outside, and was moist with a nice uneven texture inside. The pao fan was a nice foil to the rich hamburg, providing hearty soupy carbs with good beef, onion and mushroom flavours in the gravy.

Kinobe – Beef Don

MARCH 14, 2019

This was like a boiled beef don. It was nothing fantastic, although it appeared popular, since I had snapped up the last bowl. The beef was tender and some well distributed fats, but lacked flavour and charredness which I normally associate with and expect from beef. Meh.
