Breakfast Hola – Taiwanese at South Bridge Road Chinatown

APRIL 24, 2023

Recommended by Tan Hsueh Yun of The Straits Times. The Spicy Cai Poh Egg Crepe Roll was eggy, soft and crispy at the edges, paired with the saltiness and crunchiness of the chai poh. The Taiwanese Cold Noodles were refreshing and chewy, with crispy cucumber, and a creamy and rich sesame sauce. Nice.

Eva’s Pancake – Peanut Pancake at Lorong 4 Toa Payoh Palm Spring

FEBRUARY 22, 2023

Recommended by Eatbook.sg. The traditional-style pancake was made from very nice and fragrant batter, chewy and bouncy, and crispy at the edges. This was as good as the old Tanglin Halt one. The peanut filling was really fragrant and crunchy, and the peanut butter added a nice richness and butteriness. Good stuff by a young hawker.

Smile Martabak at Funan Mall City Hall

DECEMBER 15, 2022

The martabak was essentially a more qq, chewy and thick peanut pancake; the Original Choco-Cheese Martabak had a nice sweetness and good bounciness and chewiness. The Bakso Meatball Soup was a bit salty, although the beef balls were quite flavourful, qq and enjoyable.

True Breakfast – Taiwanese at Cuppage Plaza Orchard

AUGUST 10, 2022

Recommended by many, and apparently seeing one to one and a half hour queues just a couple of months ago. The taste was 中规中矩. I wouldn’t queue quite so long for this. I apparently got the last bowl of braised pork rice, which had a balanced savoury flavour with some fatty bits and some chewy bits of pork. The pork floss and eggs omelette was eggy and soft, going nicely with the sweet and airy pork floss, and enhanced by the sweet 酱油膏. Quite nice.

Waffl – Waffles at Jurong East Street 24

JULY 13, 2022

Recommended by SethLui.com, and an interesting and popular little Muslim-owned cafe in the middle of nowhere, three quarters full at 10pm. The waffle in the spicy chicken waffl burger was slightly doughy and crispy and sweet, and went well with the slightly crispy spicy savoury chicken patty, mayo, tomato and lettuce. All these went down nicely with the cheese chips.

Apam Balik Wak Power – Pancake at Yishun Ring Road

MAY 16, 2022

Recommended by Eatbook.sg. This is one of those pasar malam stalls which had found a permanent address during the pandemic. Very nice pancake, with a chewy texture inside and crispy outside, slight savouriness from the cheese, and sweet crunchiness from the Oreos. Nice.
