荣成潮州鱼圆面 Yong Seng Teochew Fishball Mee at Hainanese Village Houhgang Avenue 1

JANUARY 15, 2024

Recommended by Miss Tam Chiak, with a serious ten person queue constantly. The noodles were done very well – tender, smooth and qq with bite, in a strong vinegary spicy lardy sauce, and coming with fresh crispy pork lard. The ingredients were all standard fare but cooked well, including the fresh liver and bouncy fishballs.

Blanco Prawn Noodle House at Jalan Kayu Fernvale Sengkang West

DECEMBER 18, 2023

So this begins a month of posts where I’ve lost the photos and records, due to the iPhone yellow screen of death. This was recommended by Johor Kaki. I recall the prawn noodles was passable, although the stock was a bit lighter while still having the prawny savoury flavour. The prawns were fresh and sweet, and similarly the tender pork ribs. A very serviceable bowl.

新兴记 Sin Heng Kee – Porridge at Hougang Street 61

OCTOBER 21, 2023

Recommended by ieatishootipost. This was really wow – a really thick and viscous porridge, with maximum flavour, and generous ingredients. The sliced pork and pork balls were really tender and sweet and slightly peppery, and the century egg nicely pungent.

This was something I would eat very regularly if I stayed nearer. No wonder the queue and the packed coffee house. Just watch out for the queuing and seating system – you find your own seats if there are still seats available, and you join the queue and someone will assign you seats if it is packed.

Huang Kee Hong Kong Style Wanton Noodle at Compassvale Bow Sengkang

SEPTEMBER 30, 2023

Recommended by Johor Kaki, with quite a long queue at lunchtime on a Sat. The wanton mee came with black sauce in a bowl. The wantons here were really plump and smooth, and well marinated and peppery inside. The wiry noodles here were a bit soft, and the thick black sauce was more sweet than savoury. The char siew was sweet and tender, and the soup sweet and peppery. Not a bad bowl aside from the overdone noodles.

Lorong Ah Soo Lor Mee at Hainanese Village Hougang Avenue 1

AUGUST 18, 2023

Recommended by Daniel Food Diary. The lor or braising sauce had a seriously deep and meaty flavour, although retaining some lightness and balance, and complemented the noodles and ingredients well. The shredded duck meat added some texture and variation, and the ngo hiong was quite sweet and tasty.
