File’s Cafe – Fried Chicken Rice at Lucky Plaza Orchard

NOVEMBER 10, 2023

A slight queue, and a small eating space that was absolutely packed, with a famously fierce owner (although I saw none of that). The chicken rice was moist and slightly fragrant, and the fried chicken had slightly fragrant skin, but the chicken meat was a bit tough, and bergedil a bit mushy.

Chef Hainanese Western Food at Margaret Drive Queenstown

JULY 10, 2023

The chicken chop was okay, fairly tender with some bite. The skin was grilled quite nicely with some crisp and some char, and the sauce was some sort of savoury sweet mushroom like sauce. The fries and coleslaw were meh, but there was a whole boiled potato by the side. Really an average old school chicken chop. I didn’t quite understand the shouting here though, that rang through the entire hawker centre. When the chef shouts that number 4 is ready, isn’t it possible that there will be a few who had ordered number 4? Hence the bewilderedness of patrons waiting around the stall. The opening hours are also a surprisingly short 2 hours for a hawker stall like this.

Jofa Grill – Western at Bukit Merah Central

NOVEMBER 1, 2022

Recommended by 8 Days. The thick chicken chop was moist, tender, and really smoky with crispy charred skin and coming with a nice sweet brown black pepper sauce. The mash potato was really smooth and creamy, almost like the one at Joel Robuchon, and again with the nice brown black pepper sauce that tasted a bit more savoury here. Very good restaurant standard western food, by ex Burnt Ends and Joel Robuchon chefs.

Ayam Goreng Kawani at Redhill

SEPTEMBER 12, 2022

Cover by SethLui.com as a new stall. Nice crispy chicken, with the skin a bit grainy and quite an interesting texture, and the flesh a bit dry. The chilli was salty and extremely spicy, great for the masochists, but torturous for me.

Ten Tenths – Rice Bowl & Roast Meats at Havelock

JULY 25, 2022

Recommended by 8 Days. The queue was crazy, and the char siew and sio bak was sold out by 11:45am. I had the Cantonese crispy roast pork belly and signature spicy char siu with fragrance rice. The char siew was fatty, slightly caramelised and sweet with peppery notes, but was a bit too thin and unsubstantial. The sio bak was very nice, tender, fatty and flavourful, with light and crispy/crunchy crackling. The chicken rice was nicely grainy yet fluffy, moist and fragrant, paired with a slightly molten lava egg, and tangy achar. Nice tasty package.

I came back the next day for the deep fried har cheung chicken cutlet with fragrance rice. The wait was quite long at half an hour, and the crowd waiting for their food grew quite large. The chicken was nicely funky and fragrant, and had a good crispy outside and tenderness and juciness inside. Nice

Pergh!Chicks – Chicken & Burger at Jurong East

APRIL 16, 2021

The Percik chicken chop was superb – moist, tender, smoky and searingly spicy with the Percik sauce. The rice was pretty and carried a light pleasant fragrance, a bit like nasi lemak. The Ramly burger was so so, with the patty not moist enough, although the flavour from the sauce was quite satisfying.

Soh Kee Cooked Food – Chicken & Porridge at Jurong West

DECEMBER 31, 2020

The porridge was fragrant and savoury, and seemed like it was cooked in chicken stock and some oil. The chicken was tender and smooth, with gelatinous skin, and was doused in an addictive fragrant and sweet sesame oil/soy sauce. Nice comfort food – no wonder it was so popular and so many were having this.
