Yi Jia Seafood Sdn. Bhd. at Taman Bukit Indah Johor Bahru Malaysia
MARCH 9, 2024
This was the alternative seafood place after we saw the massive queue at Tian Lai. The sambal sotong and hotplate tofu were passable, but the crab on the day didn’t seem so fresh and was slightly unfirm and unsweet. The chilli crab sauce was also mostly spicy and savoury rather than sweet. Price was around S$93 in total, including 2 medium crabs.

Lao Li Da Pai Dang – Hor Fun at Simpang Bedok
JULY 31, 2023
Recommended by 8 Days. The Golden Hor fun had good wok hei, and the sauce was silky smooth and eggy, with golden streaks of egg yolk running across the dish. It was served with crisp cabbage, chye sim, fishcakes, 2 big springy prawns and sliced pork. Nice and comforting dish.

Restoran Tong Sheng – Zi Char at Melaka Malaysia
JUNE 11, 2023
This was seriously a celebrity restaurant, with many celebrity photos and a full house even at 9:15pm, 45 minutes before closing. The cheese bee hoon was cheesy without being cloying and full of wok hei, with soft and moist bee hoon and one fresh tiger prawn. The lemon chicken was crispy and refreshingly tangy and lemony. The fried vegetables were crunchy and fragrant with hae bi hiam. Nice, and I think one of the nicest meals of this trip.

東寶小館 Tung Po Kitchen – Seafood Zi Char at Hong Kong

The razor clams were really qq and bouncy, with a nice black bean and chilli flavour, and oniony and garlicky. The squid ink pasta was squidy, with the squid fresh, tender and qq. The atmosphere here was really nice thought, in comfortable air-conditioned environs.

J.B. Ah Meng Restaurant – Zi Char at Geylang
APRIL 2, 2021
The white pepper crab was not bad. The crab was really fresh and sweet, and the white pepper was really interesting and refreshing. The JB San Lou Chao Ta Bee Hoon really took me back to JB, soft, flavourful and with wok hei. There’s a good reason for the Michelin recommendation and the crowd here.

Jia Wang Cafe – Zi Char Bee Hoon at Bukit Ho Swee
AUGUST 24, 2021
Recommended by ieatishootipost. This was really a neighbourhood zi char. The bee hoon had good moistness, wok hei and flavour – I slurped it all up in double quick time. Pity about what seemed like canned pork trotters though.

Caffe Zeppin- Fried Rice & Omelette at Sin Ming
JULY 11, 2021
Recommended by Johor Kaki. The half fried / cooked omelette was very good – runny all through, slippery and tasty with good fragrance and sweet soy sauce flavour. The sesame seeds and fried garlic bits added to the aroma. The fried rice was fragrant, spicy and grainy. I cannot remember whether this was sambal fried rice, but I don’t remember any sambal. Not bad, but not memorable. The chicken cutlet was tender, slightly savoury, but also somewhat unmemorable. Will come back just for the egg.

The carrot cake was good as always – sweet, caramelised, and soft with all the wok hei and egg mixed in. The satay was quite average, skinny and dry. The zi char was very average – maybe I need to get the seafood from here. The Michelin recommended stalls fared poorly.

Maddie’s Kitchen – Zi Char at Orchard
DECEMBER 4, 2020
Recommended by various, including CNA Lifestyle. This was really very good zi char, with one of the most refined oyster omelettes I have eaten. So much so that they had expanded from a smaller to a bigger unit in Far East Plaza.
The oyster omelette was very crispy from the starch added to the egg, fragrant from the good frying skills, and came with fresh, juicy, sashimi-grade oysters. The chilli was nice and astringent, and added a nice kick and twang.
The white bee hoon was solid as well, with wok hei, seafood savouriness, and fresh seafood. The fried rice was good as well, with very nice wok hei, flavour and fresh, fat and tasty prawns.
Good stuff.

SZ Kitchen – Zi Char & Chicken Wing at Joo Koon
JULY 29, 2020
Very nice sang men with tasty eggy gravy, generous fresh seafood and minced meat pieces. The chicken wing was so so, crispy but lacking in flavour, despite the recommendation from johorkaki. I can see why this was popular with the working crowd though, with its reasonable prices, fresh and generous ingredients and tasty zi char.
