New Lane Street Foodstalls at George Town Penang Malaysia

DECEMBER 9, 2022

Eaten over a few days. The best of these were the char koay teow (smoky and fragrant), wan tan mee (nicely savoury), and bbq chicken wings (sweet and crispy outside). The lor bak and or luah were not bad. Can stay away from the satay (a bit dry) and char koay kak (indeterminate flavour).

Shuang Bao Thai Street Food – Hatyai Fried Chcken at Bedok North Street 1

OCTOBER 21, 2022

Recommended by 8 Days, and a serious hole-in-the-wall shop. The chicken skin was very crispy and almost crunchy like pork rind, and ungreasy. The chicken wing was also crispy outside, and fairly tender inside. The flavour was overall moderately salty, and somewhat one dimensional with tinge of spice layering.

Wings – Fried Chicken Wing Rice at Alexandra Road

MARCH 17, 2022

Offshoot of the Tony Cafe. The chicken rice was really fragrant and just slightly dry, and paired well with the spicy chilli with a kick. The cabbage was greasy and the egg tasty. The chicken wing was tender inside and crispy outside, with a thick batter, but only slightly savoury. I wished it had a stronger and more distinctive flavour. But I really like the rice and finished it all up.

Hammee’s Fried Chicken Rice at Commonwealth Crescent

AUGUST 26, 2021

They have converted from selling burgers to selling nasi ayam goreng and boy, they are really doing it well.

I visited them on two consecutive days, and had the chicken rice with Malaysian style chicken thigh on the first day. The chicken thigh with lemongrass, galangal and spices was one of the best fried chicken I have tasted, very flavourful with turmeric both outside and inside, very crispy outside, and very tender and juicy inside, with the juices almost spurting out. The rice was very fragrant and tasty, albeit a bit dry, and paired well with the strong and spicy chicken rice chilli. The egg was seriously molten and oozing with yolk.

I had the Singaporean style chicken wing with nasi lemak on the second day. The chicken wing with soy sauce, sesame oil and spices was not bad, similarly crispy outside and juicy inside, but having a less distinctive flavour than the Malaysian style chicken. The nasi lemak rice was really very fragrant with coconut milk, and was grainy and just slightly sticky. The sambal belachan that came with it had a strong and funky hae bi taste. The cuttlefish fillet was crispy outside, moist inside, with a very nice cuttlefish flavour.

They seriously did everything very well, and with pride. Very nice.

Famous Malaysia Winner’s Fried Chicken at Alexandra Village

MAY 3, 2021

The fried chicken wing and drumstick were very fresh and juicy, less so for the chicken breast. The skin was lightly crispy and salty peppery. Very light and even healthy tasting, although savoury and tasty fried chicken. Quite nice, which was why the wait for the fried half spring chicken was half an hour.

Yon Yan – Bee Hoon & Chicken Wing at West Coast

MARCH 31, 2021

So it turns out that the owner of Yon Yan has closed the stall at West Coast Food Centre, and is acting as a consultant to the current Yon Yan at this coffeeshop, according to ieatishootipost. So this was the third in the series of bee hoon and chicken wing stalls he has sold or left behind, and which I have followed since about thirty years ago – the first two were at Commonwealth Crescent and Redhill Lane.

Everything continued to be very nice. The bee hoon moist and tasty, and the cabbage oily and sloppy. The chicken wing was really one of the gold standards of chicken wings, crispy outside, juicy and tender inside, and getting their seasoning of pepper, salt, msg, soy sauce and oyster sauce exactly right, creating a favour that was just nice, and makes you come back for more.

Da Ji Hainanese Chicken Rice Deep Fried Chicken Wing at Toa Payoh

MARCH 17, 2021

The chicken wing was crispy, well marinated and savoury, although not so moist and tender. The chicken rice was fragrant and gingery, grainy and a bit dry. The chilli was spicy and potent, and tasty as well. Very nice – I finished the rice even though I was trying to go low carb.

Pang’s Hakka Noodles at Little India

MARCH 5, 2021

The Hakka noodles was slightly thicker mee kia – I would have preferred thinner noodles. Nevertheless, it was a flavour bomb, with full-on pork lard fragrance and sweetness. The yong tau foo pieces were quite standard, and the fermented beancurd sauce chicken wings were very flavourful, slightly on the savoury spectrum, pungent and with a thick crispy batter outside and tender moist meat inside. Nice – the owner of the now defunct Antoinette was seriously manning the stall full-time.
