New Lane Street Foodstalls at George Town Penang Malaysia

DECEMBER 9, 2022

Eaten over a few days. The best of these were the char koay teow (smoky and fragrant), wan tan mee (nicely savoury), and bbq chicken wings (sweet and crispy outside). The lor bak and or luah were not bad. Can stay away from the satay (a bit dry) and char koay kak (indeterminate flavour).

Qi Shan Carrot Cake at Cheng San Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10

OCTOBER 29, 2022

Recommended by 8 Days, with the hawker having an interesting back story. The black carrot cake was all fried up, soft, sticky garlicky, and sweet from the black soy sauce, and accompanied with caramelised egg and crunchy chai por. Worth travelling for actually, and almost there with the Redhill carrot cake.

339 AMK Carrot Cake at Chong Boon Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10

SEPTEMBER 24, 2022

Recommended by The Straits Times as a cheap and delicious meal. They were sold out at 1pm on a Sunday, with only a few takeaway packets left. The white carrot cake was nua nua and almost creamy, with the egg fried in, quite flavourful, with very potent chilli. Not bad actually; quite different from those white carrot cake with very little flavour. You could actually see and taste specks of I think carrot and chai poh in the kuey, which was nice.

Yuan Cheng Carrot Cake at Telok Blangah Drive

AUGUST 23, 2022

Recommended by Miss Tam Chiak and various newspapers, with a constant 4 to 5 person queue at 11am. This was a long-standing stall, and the unoily black carrot cake was savoury sweet, soft, eggy and smoky with some crispy bits and a bit of caramelisation. The chai poh and garlic provide an additional layer of fragrance and bite as well.

133 Ang Mo Kio Carrot Cake

AUGUST 14, 2022

Soft, smooth, sweet and straightforward. Reasonably eggy, some smokiness, although without much caramelisation. Very serviceable $2 carrot cake, one I wouldn’t mind having near my house, but nothing I will travel specially for from Jurong.

Golden Chopsticks @ Bukit Timah Food Centre

JULY 29, 2022

The black carrot cake was really good, soft, sweet, eggy and slightly caramelised. The white carrot cake was on the firm side, slightly savoury and so so, lacking that bit of oiliness and fragrance.

Wah Soon Kei Carrot Cake at Katong Shopping Centre

JULY 1, 2022

Recommended by 8 Days and Miss Tam Chiak, and opened by an SMRT corporate executive turned hawker. The soft but with bite carrot cake had a good crispness and wok hei, and a nice carrot cake and egg fragrance. The chai por added a very nice crunch and sweetness, and the prawns another layer of flavour and bouncy texture. Much like the Yishun carrot cake.
